Karate Uniform

The karate uniform is an integral part of the martial artist.

A traditional karate uniform is a white open jacket. The open jacket has strings or ties which are used to keep the jacket closed. The jacket ties to the inner collar of the opposing side.

The karate jacket is designed to allow the student to freely move. A jacket is not supposed to be tight and should only be sized to fit the height and weight and occasionally the arm length. The pants of a tradional karate uniform have a drawstring waist as opposed to a elastic waist. The drawstring waist is designed to keep the student from have a too much constriction around the waist.

The looser waist gives the martial artist more freedom to perform moves and speciality kicks. The more modern karate uniform has an elastic waist which is intended to be worn by children. The sizing for the pants should be based on height and weight and sometimes the outseam.

Karate Uniforms are sold in somewhat weird sizes: kids sizes XXXS – 000; XXS – 00; XS – 0; S – 1; M – 2; L – 3; adult size S – 4; M – 5; L – 6; XL – 7; XXL – 8; XXXL – 9

Some manufacturers have different sizing charts for their uniforms but that is the general sizing chart. I have heard stories of moms buying their kid size 8 uniforms because they wear a kids size 8. They end up returning a uniform that would cover their bed.
